With this Record Breaking series I thought I would go a little deeper after producing the Kaleidacycle series. I wanted to stick to the collage theme but using something that I was attached too. I used to DJ for many years and built up a record collection that meant a lot to me. I started by smashing my most treasured records. First up was Marvin Gaye.. What da?! ..not sure if you heard me. I was prepared to smash my very own copy of Marvin Gaye - Whats Going On? I stood there for ten minutes holding the record asking myself ‘what am I doing? This is crazy’. Then remembered that some of my best work comes from not knowing if it will work and taking the risk.
In 2010 a friend asked me to donate a piece of work for Christie’s Green Auction in the US. I was fortunate enough to have my piece sent to Sir Paul McCartney for him to sign before it shipped to NY. Wish I owned this one!
I was commissioned by a fantastic advertising agency in London, Brothers and Sisters, to produce a large piece. The idea was for me to come into the company after all the employees had bought 1 record each. There was even a younger member of staff who had never owned a vinyl record before. They played their record and handed it to me with the story of why they had chosen it. This was a really moving experience. This piece has a collective energy of the whole company.
These pieces are really hard to get a great photo of. Like most art they look so much better when you see them in person. There is a reflective quality you completely miss here.
